So—how are LinkedIn and rain in two different states somehow connected?
Entrepreneurship is still pretty new to me, something I’m getting used to and educating myself on. And some parts of it are hard. So of course, some new habit I’m trying to form is going to feel intimidating. It’s Washington rain: draining and almost oppressive.
But a year from now—heck, even just a few months—I’ll have an evolved outlook on it, because my filter is different. It’s not the New Scary, it’s just something I do as a part of my business, the same way that these days I send invoices and ask for changes to contracts without overthinking. It’ll become Arizona rain, and maybe even something I look forward to.
How are your filters affecting you? Like me, is there something you’ve been afraid to start or suggest because it feels insurmountable? Try to picture yourself in a few months, or after offering that suggestion. What’s the filter you would have then? Does recognizing it make it easier to do the hard thing today?
Or maybe there’s something you’re trying to change or implement in your work and you’re getting pushback from someone. How is their filter influencing them?
Are you trying to change a preflight process, or a control screen, and the aircraft operator is hesitant because they’re already overloaded with things to do and look at and think about?
Are you giving a task to a junior member of your team thinking it’s a no-brainer—but for them, it’s a whole project with a new skillset to learn?
I considered not sending this pair of emails, because on the surface it feels like your standard “look at things from another perspective!” sort of advice. But I think we all can use that reminder every once in a while. Remember: rain feels different in the desert than it does in a rainforest.
And to think I got the spark to write this because last week the rain partially flooded my kitchen.
(For the record, I am genuinely curious about what you’ve been struggling with. Feel free to reply back—maybe a set of fresh eyes can help you see through the drizzle.)
